Obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN) is usually the first thing you should take care of when you arrive in Canada as an immigrant for the first time.
SIN is a unique nine-digit number required for various activities, such as opening a bank account, applying for a job, and receiving benefits from government programs such as Employment Insurance (EI) and Canada Pension Plan (CPP).
Getting a SIN can be confusing and time-consuming, especially for permanent residents (PRs), international students, and workers who just arrived in the country for various reasons-

When I first arrived in Canada under the Express Entry immigration program, it took me two tries to get inside a Service Canada Office. But besides the long wait times, both in-person and for appointments, my overall experience was great!
I arrived at a Service Canada Center to queue outside at around 1 pm on my first try and could not get in until 4 pm because several others were waiting ahead of me. I returned another day at around 9 am and was in within 10 minutes. I had to wait a couple of hours for my turn, and it took my wife and me around 15 minutes to fill up the forms and get the SIN number.

Who can apply for a SIN number?
You can apply for a SIN number if you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident (PR), or a temporary resident (TR).
If you are a visitor, student, worker, or temporary resident permit holder in Canada, you also need a SIN number to work or receive benefits and services from government programs.
However, if you are a temporary resident and your current status does not have a work or study permit in Canada, you are not eligible for a SIN.
Applying for a SIN in-person, online, or by mail
After you arrive in Canada, you have three different ways to apply for a SIN.
You can visit a Service Canada office and get your SIN the same day. It can take 10 days to process your application if you apply online, while applications by mail can take up to 20 days.
Applying for a SIN in-person
For new immigrants in Canada residing in temporary accommodation, such as a hotel or Airbnb, the best way to get a Social Insurance Number is to apply in person at a nearby Service Canada Office.
You can visit a Service Canada Office near you immediately after you arrive with all the necessary documents, and you’ll have your SIN the same day you apply.
If you arrived in Canada as a permanent resident, you must take the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) letter and your passport. Temporary residents will need to provide their Canadian work or study permits, which indicates that they may accept employment in Canada.
The only downside of in-person application? You might have to wait in a queue for a few hours before your turn arrives. You can also book an appointment for an in-person application, but your appointment date can be a week or two out.
Plan to arrive at the Service Canada Office as soon as the office opens at around 8 or 9 am, and you should be able to get in and out with a SIN in your hand in a couple of hours.
Applying for a SIN online
You can also apply for a SIN online, but this process requires more documents to verify your identity, and it can take around ten days to process your application.
When applying for a SIN online, you need proof of address, and your hotel’s or Airbnb’s address might not work. You might be unable to use the mailbox service in these facilities to receive your SIN.
To apply online, you need a primary document providing your status in Canada, a secondary document to verify your identity, and a third document showing your proof of address.
You can use your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) letter or your permanent resident card (PR) as the primary document. Temporary residents can use a valid work permit or study permit.
You also need a secondary document to verify your identity. It can be a passport (Canadian or foreign), a provincial or territorial ID card, a driver’s license, or a government-issued ID.
Your proof of address should also include correspondence from the government, a financial institution, an educational institution, or a bill addressed to you.
